International Women’s Day
The 8th of March is acknowledged and celebrated across the world as International Women’s Day, and provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women, their contributions to society and the continuing struggle of women to participate with equality in society.
In 2011 we celebrated International Women's Day with a lunch at the Women's Centre.
Special Guest speakers:
Dr Nonie Harris, Head of Department of Social Work and Community Welfare, James Cook University and
Ryl Harrison, PhD Student, Women;s Studies, James Cook University.
During the afternoon we also held a cent sale and raffled off a quilt and other prizes to raise money for the Women's Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand whose building had been destroyed by the earthquake in February.
Thanks to the efforts of all the women who attended, we were able to raise $900.
In 2012 we will once again hold an event at the Women's Centre, 50 Patrick Street, Aitkenvale, Townsville to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th.

Reclaim the Night
Reclaim the Night marches and rallies are peaceful protests against sexual violence towards women and children, in order to promote women's strength and survival. By taking part in this symbolic protest, we are making a statement demanding our right to feel safe.
Sexual Violence Awareness Month
Each October is designated Sexual Violence Awareness Month during which the Women's Centre aims to raise public awareness about sexual violence in our community through a range of activities. Each year these vary, and we invite all women to become involved in these events. The Month culminates in the Reclaim the Night march.
