Reclaim the Night 2010 Last years event was held at the Strand Park, Townsville on Friday 29th October. The theme of this years' Reclaim the Night event was: isay who isay when sexual violence has to end
Townsville Community Turns out in force to say NO to sexual violence Over 250 women marched down the Strand with banners to say NO to sexual violence. The women came from many sections of the community, from businesses and organisations to support this important message. Well done Townsville! Support from organisations and businesses: We ask all Townsville businesses and organisations to support this event again in 2011. To join the people who say NO to Sexual violence, please contact cathy@thewomenscentre.org.au The marchers will carry banners which say "name of your business says NO" and the business name and logo will be promoted on our website. We encourage the women employees/partners to march with the banner, and for the men to support them from the sidelines. Write a Song Win an iphone We asked you to create a song which promotes an end to sexual violence. The winner of this competition was Eve Bolton - Congratulations. Sexual Violence Awareness Month Events We had a full month of events during Sexual Violence Awareness Month: October 2010. New Car Our new Mazda 2 has a safety message against sexual violence. This was Launched on October 1st. The message has been funded through: Safe and Healthy Townsville a partnership between Townsville City Council and BHP Billiton Cannington
Look out for the "isay" car around town Launch of Sexual Violence Awareness Month The Month was launched on Friday 1st October 2010, with a free pancake breakfast in the front carpark of the centre. Welcome to Country was performed by Gracelyn Smallwood, Well known author and feminist Betty McLellan gave an inspiring speech on sexual assault in the community, and Cheryl Scanlon spoke of the Sexual Assault Fax Back programme which has now been in operation for 12 months. Member for Mundingburra, Lindy Nelson-Carr presented the prize for the winner of the song competition, and Townsville City Councillor Jenny Hill cut the ribbon on the isay car. A delicious pancake breakfast was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all the community members for their support of the launch.
Women on Wheels The Women's Centre and Key Motors Mazda presented Women on Wheels a protective behaviours and car awareness seminar. Film and Food Nights Many women participated in the Food, Film and Discussion evenings. Thursday 7th October - Film: Lani's Story Lani's Story follows a woman's experience of two relationships one she has to escape to survive, and another she cannot survive without. It is a moving and intimate portrait of a young Aboriginal woman's journey from victim to victor, from a broken and violent relationship to discovering the redemptive power of love. Lani's Story also explores the impact of inter-generational violence within a family and community and how the courage of one person can transform the lives of others. Thursday 14th October - Documentary: Trafficked Thursday 21st October - Film: The Man Who Stole my Mother's Face Activities at The Women's Centre Tshirt Printing / Badge and Banner Making Print your own tshirts and create banners and badges for Reclaim the Night. Mosaic making We are building a mosaic wall to be a part of a 'healing garden' at the centre. Townsville Hospital October 11th to 22nd, 2010 The agencies involved in this exhibition were: Queensland Police, Victim Assist Queensland, Sexual Health Services, Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit and The Women's Centre as the Townsville Sexual Assault Service. The exhibition centred on the theme "Your Story, Your Choice - your doorway to information and support following sexual assault". A pamphlet holder was developed to hold information about each of the five services involed. This is available from any of the above services to inform victims of sexual assault about supports and services available to them. The Exhibition was opened by Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh.
