Services

Daily and on-going Counselling

Daily counselling and on-going counselling is available throughout the week from 9:00 am4:45 pm, with the exception of Thursdays, when the Centre closes at 12.45 pm. During the Centre’s closing hours, access to services is available via telephone. Please note phone calls are restricted to around 15-20 minutes, and cases needing further help may be referred to counsellors during working hours as a part of ongoing counselling.

Women’s Shelter Referrals

The Women’s Centre provides shelter referrals for women and their children who are currently experiencing homelessness as a result of many contributing factors, including domestic violence.

Special Interest Groups

The Women’s Centre runs many special interest groups through the year. Such groups are run with the aim of meeting the needs and achieving positive outcomes for women within the community.

Activism

Activism plays a significant role within the Women’s Centre, as we seek to advocate for women’s rights, empowerment, raise community awareness, promote and act for social and political change. Such activities we proudly facilitate and take part in include:

Outreach to Ingham, Ayr and Charters Towers

The Women’s Centre provides outreach and support services to Ingham, Ayr and Charters Towers on a monthly basis.  This is primarily a Sexual Assault service, however counselling, support and information can also be provided to women. Women in these areas can access the service by calling the Women’s Centre on (07) 4775 7555 or toll free on 1800 657 501. 

Emergency Relief Funds

From time to time, the Women’s Centre receives Emergency Relief Funding from both State and Federal Governments to provide emergency relief to women. To access Emergency Relief , an appointment with the daily counsellor must be made.

We often have food parcels as well as supplies of bread for women, generously donated by local bakeries.

The Women’s Centre has a donations cupboard which contains a variety of materials including; clothing, shoes, sheets and blankets.

Please note that the Centre’s emergency relief is in great demand and not all items and foods listed will always be available. The Women’s Centre also accepts most donations (but no electrical items) so please feel free to drop in any pre-loved possessions.

Phone, Computer and Internet Access

The Women’s Centre has computers with internet access available for use by women within the centre.

The Centre also has a phone which is available for all women to use. First time users should check with Reception workers regarding appropriate use of these facilities.

Training and Community Education

The Women's Centre provides community education on sexual assault, domestic violence and healthy relationships to schools, and other organisations on request.

Together with The North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service and Sera's Women's Shelter, we are a part of PAVE (Providers of Anti Violence Education) which provides community education on domestic and family violence to the community.
